Abstract

Purpose – This article aims to assess and articulate the prospects for sustainable green economy growth in Tulungagung, Indonesia. The main objective is to identify opportunities, challenges, and strategic approaches for implementing a regional green economy model that can reinforce sustainable development at the local level.

Design/methodology/approach – This study employs both qualitative and quantitative methods, including literature review, analysis of regional economic data, and structured interviews and surveys with local businesses, government stakeholders, and community members. SWOT analysis and the analytical GAP approach are utilized to assess enabling and constraining factors for green economic development.

Findings – Findings reveal that Tulungagung holds substantial untapped potential in green sectors, especially in organic agriculture, renewable energy, and waste management. Local government support and the active role of business actors are vital for accelerating the transition towards a green economy. Key challenges include limited access to green technology, constrained financial resources, and low levels of green economy literacy within the community.

Research limitations/implications – This research is regionally focused and does not cover all sub-sectors of the green economy in depth. The study’s implications provide foundational insights for evidence-based policymaking, encourage green investment, and foster cross-sectoral collaboration in innovative sustainable development initiatives.

Originality/value – This paper offers a fresh regional perspective on green economy prospects, an area rarely explored systematically in the Indonesian context, particularly in Tulungagung. It enriches both theoretical discourse and practical guidance by serving as a reference for policy development and best practices for sustainable green economy implementation.
