Empowering the Creative Economy Through Local Wisdom: Strategic Approaches in Central Java

Abstract

Purpose – This paper investigates strategies to empower the creative economy based on local wisdom in Central Java. The research stresses the vital role of indigenous cultural values in promoting sustainable economic growth and uplifting community welfare.

Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative methodology is adopted, involving case studies in various districts throughout Central Java. Data collection is conducted through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory observation with stakeholders including local government representatives, creative industry practitioners, and community leaders. The data are analyzed thematically, resulting in strategic recommendations for empowerment.

Findings – The analysis demonstrates that local wisdom serves as a catalyst for innovation and reinforces the unique identity of creative products. Sustainable creative economic activities depend on robust community participation, multi-stakeholder collaboration, and adaptive strategic approaches. Furthermore, blending traditional values with contemporary business practices enhances both competitiveness and market reach at national and international levels.

Research limitations/implications – The study's scope is limited to selected districts within Central Java, which may restrict the generalizability of the findings. Additionally, the rapidly changing technological and market landscapes may affect the sustainability of the strategies proposed. Future studies are encouraged to broaden the geographical focus and engage in comparative research with other regions.

Originality/value – This study makes a distinct contribution by integrating local wisdom into a strategic framework designed for creative economy empowerment in Central Java. The findings are relevant for policymakers, practitioners, and scholars seeking sustainable development pathways rooted in local potentials.
