Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates and compares oral traditions in the regions of Kalimantan and South Sulawesi, with particular attention to their varied forms, pivotal social functions, and overarching socio-cultural importance. The research seeks to uncover commonalities and unique distinctions present in these traditions and interprets their roles in shaping group identity and ensuring cultural resilience within local communities.

Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative and comparative methodology underpins this study, drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, direct observations, comprehensive interviews, and a close textual analysis of oral tradition manuscripts. Data collection has involved immersive engagement with cultural practitioners and custodians in both Kalimantan and South Sulawesi, enhancing the validity and relevance of the findings.

Findings – The analysis highlights both the convergence and divergence inherent in the oral traditions in the two regions. These traditions operate as instruments of value transmission, collective memory, and the sustenance of social cohesion, while simultaneously reflecting locality-specific elements such as ecological context, cosmology, and historical interaction. The research also reveals continuing adaptation and negotiation with modernity, technology, and changing societal demands.

Research limitations/implications – Limitations include the representativeness of the selected case studies and restricted access to certain bearers of tradition due to linguistic and socio-cultural constraints. Some oral narratives remain elusive or under-documented, reflecting sensitivities or prohibitions within certain communities. Ongoing research and periodic updates are necessary to capture the evolving nature of oral traditions.

Originality/value – This article offers an in-depth and comparative exploration seldom attempted between these two major Indonesian regions, offering substantive insight into the distinctive and adaptive processes within oral traditions. The work is pertinent not only to academic discourse but also to policy making and initiatives around cultural preservation and revitalization at a national and international level.
